laialda: (I love love/Shipping)
Finally got the husband to be to sit down and watch Doctor Who with me when I was visiting him last week and I am haooy to announce he has correct opinions about not only the loveliness of 9, but about the undeniable chemistry between the Doctor and Rose, and how much he liked their relationship along with enjoying Rose as a character/companion! :D <3

That's one ship checked off the ol' list. Hoping to get him on the Alice and Hatter one next ^_~
laialda: (Analyze/Writing)
So Fall started out looking great. I went to my convention, did really, really well and bought my plane ticket to go and see my husband next week. The rest of the month was looking free of convention obligation as my next one isn't until January and I could use the time to finally work on my long neglected fics.

Then my mother got admitted to the hospital with her right lung having collapsed.

She's been taking medicine since January to treat a bacterial infection in her lungs call MAK or M.A.I. and had just started treatment at the end of June for a lung fungal infection that she'd picked up thanks to her compromised immune system. So they re-inflate the lung, get her off the oxygen and send her back home...only for me to drive her right back up 3 days later as her lung had started to collapse again, thus requiring what ended up being a 3 week stay at the hospital while they performed 2 separate surgeries (one after 3 days the other after 10 when they noticed her lung was still leaking).

She's home now and on the mend, albeit very slowly since you know...lung surgery and all, and all my time has gone completely out the window. My days before were work, feed pets, go to hospital, go home sleep, repeat and are now basically the same except I get to stay at home while trying to keep my mother's sprint's up and taking care of just about all of her needs (the 20 foot walk to the bathroom from her bed leaves her winded and needing to catch her breath). My younger 22 year old sister has been helping out as much as she can as well, but she's working 30 hr weeks while attending school full time so her availability is much more limited than mine. I can only hope my mother is well enough to prepare her own food come next Thursday when I fly out as I don't think anyone will be able to help her during the day...

I'm also the family hub for information on how her recovery was and is still going. Most everyone has been understanding about when I get them information and thankful for being kept in the loop, but my uncle, my mother's brother, has been driving me a bit crazy with his expectations as I apparently wasn't doing enough to keep the house clean and looking well maintained during those 30 mins I was at home everyday. A point driven home to the extreme when I came home from work Monday to find him doing a (bad) vacuuming job, cleaning the kitchen, and picking up things around the house. Things that I had slowly been working on over the weekend and then had to go back behind him and put things where they actually belonged and re-cleaning his quick kitchen job. Urg. I'm also on the edge of taking it as a personal insult that he calls either my self or my mother everyday to make sure she's eating enough - meaning as much food as he eats in a day which my mother couldn't do even before she got sick. It's a large source of frustration...

Tl;dr - My mother has been in the hospital for the last month and all of my free time was spent keeping her sane or taking care of her. I out right laughed at a friend of mine that I hadn't seen since my convention asked how my wedding plans and immigration work was coming. I sneak in reading, tumblr, and look at all my wonderful flist when I should be sleeping and am pretty much exhausted and at my breaking point.

Next Thursday can not come fast enough....and I feel horrible for saying that. *Sigh*
laialda: (Excitement)
OMG you guys. SO I know I've not been around much (and sorry, that won't really be changing until after September), but I have a long weekend so I took the time yesterday to finish my painting and I'm soooo HAPPY with it! :D

A-Fools-Dance

While I have a few nitpicking parts (that I won't get into) I'm overall very pleased with how this turned out. No idea what I'll be doing with it now, lol, maybe mate and frame it, but it's lovely and makes me happy.

On a side note: Reason for my absence? Conventions. I've been attending cons to sell my dolls and doing better than I'd anticipated so that's where all of my non-work time has been going. After Baltimore comic con in Sept. I won't have another con until Jan so I'm hoping *crosses fingers* that I'll be able to do some writing and other things during that time. Until then...I shall most likely continue to be a ghost that occasionally finds a moment to comment.
laialda: (Technical/Working)
With my next con quickly approaching this weekend, I've been scrambling to finish up all my new dolls this entire month. I posted some of them last month, but I'm now ready to share the big dump, so all you wonderful people can see why I've not been around posting/commenting or really do much of anything beyond simple replies.

The 4th Doctor

Superman

Thor

Ironman

Dr. Horrible

And many more over in my deviantart gallery. I was going to post all the pictures...but there's about 10 in all and, yeah...that's a fair amount of images to load so I just picked my favorites of the bunch. :D

Art update

Mar. 23rd, 2012 11:16 pm
laialda: (Analyze/Writing)
It's late and since I won't be home to work on it this weekend, thought I'd share my progress so far on my dancing piece:

(Excuse the crooked picture taking, :P)
As you can see, I decided on watercolor for the medium, but I'll be adding additional details and texturing afterwards with color pencils. Really, really happy with how this is turning out so far. Also, proof to all my claims about actually having a degree in this stuff I suppose, lol. This is about 6 hours in of work, and only half that time was on the background sections.

...is it bad when I no longer want to drive to VA to see my sister's senior fashion show this weekend and work on my picture instead?
laialda: (Default)
So I've got my next convention coming up on April 20th and to get ready for it I'm making lots of superhero/comic book dolls. So far I've finished:
Comic books and the Doctor's Sexy this way... )
laialda: (A Toast!)
A few hours into the day and I'm already receiving several birthday well wishes on all the usual suspects, as well as a few birthday first. I've never had anyone gift me a fic before and the digital cupcake was also a very nice surprise when I checked my messages this morning, so thank you for those my flist friends. ^_^

I wanted to take this moment however on my birthday to wish you all a very merry unbirthday in return! :D I even baked you a cake. ;)

A very nice robot gave it to me. Said she wouldn't be needing it for some reason...Oh well, more for us then!

I think I'll be spending my day doing some writing or drawing. Gym first though, that's sadly unavoidable, but floor/chair class is a fun way to do it I suppose. ;) You all enjoy this lovely cake and have a Very Merry Unbirthday!

laialda: (Wedding Stuff)
So, as some of you know, I have less than 10 months to my wedding and all the main hurdles are starting to become scary close...

laialda: (filler)
So flisters, you may or may not have noticed a lack of any activity from me from about...mid November. The main reason for that being my friend and I were last minute confirmed for a table at the gaming convention Magfest. This of course meant the 5 months I originally had to make my little dolls suddenly became 1.5 and i had to crochet and sew like a mad woman.

All the work paid off in the end though as my friend and I had a kick ass time at the con and each made over 1k selling our geeky crafts. :D We were also interviewed! So if you'd like to see a tired Saturday morning me takling about my stuff then just click on the link here.

The most surprising thing for me at the con was just how popular Doctor Who was with gamers. I sold my 11th Doctor, 10th Doctor, 10th Doctor in Blue, Cyberman, and a plush TARDIS. Only poor Rose didn't sell :( Though I gave out lots of business cards to people anxious to see what new Doctor Who dolls I would make, so that's exciting as I love new friends/stalkers. ^_^

Two girls also made my weekend by knowing who/where my Hatter doll was from and we gushed over Mr. Potts for a good few minutes. :D

This was my first convention where I've been able to talk to people who are buying my dolls and it was really great to see how many people like my little creations, and talk to them about them. As such, I do have about 5 doll commissions to make before I can get started on new ones for my next convention in April (A comic con so lots of superhero dolls coming this way soon), but before then I want to churn out some new chapters for Curious and Curiouser. Poor chapter 11 has been in my head since June and I'd like to reward my faithful readers by writing up maybe another 4-5 chapters to post over the next 2 months so that while I'm working on dolls and things I don't have to worry about trying to write at the same time.

I'd also like to get some chapters written for my DW/Alice crossover New New Wonderland as I really want to get to the second arc as I've FINALLY over the last few months started to figure out how I'd change the plot of Alice. :)

Well, I've got one gaming onesie commission down and one to go before starting my dolls, but I'll be around the interwebs while I work so you should start seeing me around more. ^_^
laialda: (direct)
So...Nanowrimo...was too depressed to try it last year and my schedule has just cleared up time wise so I'm thinking I may take a crack at it. Though, not the starting a new story part (I really do not need a new plot to work on thanks) but just writing 50k words in a month. So my plans for it are this:

~8k to finish up 'Living the High Life' which, with luck, Part 4 will be done today
~30-40k for another 3-4 chapters of 'Curiouser and Curiouser' and possibly a 'Moments of Lucidity' piece
Remainder to be used for whatever strikes my fancy for already established works (like Complicated and New Wonderland) or as drabbles/one-shots.

Seeing how much of Tumbling I churned out back when I started it, I think it's a very realistic/achievable goal to aim for. No doubt CaC readers will be happy to know I'm not dead. *hangs head in shame* Means I'll be taking a rather large break from crafting for the month, but I'm considering it research time to see who/what I need to make things for for Christmas.

On an off topic Doctor Who related note: got into a conversation with my sister about Doctor Who companions and - being much more into fashion than I ever will be - she informed me of the fact that the look Rose sports (roots showing and wearing heavily applied mascara) was actually a fashion style for a few years. So, there you go people. She didn't always need to dye her hair, she actually kept it that way on purpose. Makes sense when you look at the shift in her look after spending 3 years in Pete's World (no roots, very light make up, and a bit nicer clothing). Kind of makes me want to write a drabble for that conversation between her and TenII about her change in style.

Well, off to try and finish this chapter. *cracks knuckles*
laialda: (Dr. Who)
Soo, I know I wasn't too keen on my party on Thursday, and even an hour before people were to arrive I wasn't happy because I had so much to do in so little time. But! This all turned around when my very good friends arrived and surprised me with their costume of choice: 9th Doctor and Rose

I was grinning so hard once I saw them that I didn't even notice Nine was holding up his wallet with psychic paper and introducing himself and his plus one. The pair had kept it under wraps from me and I'm so glad they did as it was the turning point of my night from grumpy to excited as I had not just Nine and Rose, but Ten and Eleven show up as well!! \o/ Win!!

Some small preview pictures and then lots more accompanied by a summary of the night under the cut. (Warning, lots of lovely pictures!)

You know you want to see more ;) )Here's to wishing everyone a fantastic Halloween!
laialda: (Evil)
Dear Halloween Party,

I do not appriciate having to move you up to Friday. My costume is only half done, and the <s>Doctors</s> silly boys I live with require alterations as well. Not to mention all the food I must make. I should really just cancel you.

No Love,
-Lai

Thanks to Funday Monday's topic on [livejournal.com profile] doctor_rose_fix, I've spent this week on new art and old art. And for once I don't mean crafts.

...though I have worked on those too....

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Feel free to let me know if you like them though. ^_^

A Night Out

Oct. 2nd, 2011 04:37 pm
laialda: (Incorrect)
I don't get them often and, honestly, I don't really crave going out and being jostled at clubs or bars or what have you. Still, there was something to be said for going out with great friend when you are poor. They all knew this from that start but love my company and proclaimed 'no excuses we shall buy dinner for you!'. Well, who am I to turn down free food from a local Baltimore burger joint called Abby Burger? ^_~ The special thing about them is that they have uncommon meats available for your burgers (last night's special was kangaroo) and let you build it however you like. Now I'd actually never been, but my friends have a handful of times, and instead of a nice dinner out, the evening quickly turned into 'Let's get Nicole drunk cause she never drinks a lot at our parties!' and then 'Oh we're so full! You know what we should do? Go dancing and drink at another bar!'

So I was treated to a night of free drinks (totaled to: Some frozen raspberry thing named after the Ravens, a SoCo and lime shot, an ice-tea flavored thing mixed with lemonade shot, a rum & coke, and half of an alcoholic berger (cookie not meat) shake), a great meal, and all I had to do was deal with being as drunk as I can get (note: I don't drink a lot cause it doesn't turn my brain off/lower inhibitions for whatever reason, just makes me feel light headed and dizzy) and dance for about an hour before sick person begged (and DD) said he needed to go home.

Not too bad of an evening and it makes the horrible person in me want to claim I have no money more often just to see if I can get more nights like this. XD

On a completely different topic, I NEED NEW VEGAS TO BE LESS ADDICTING!! >.< Seriously, it kept me from getting some dolls finished this last week and it's all I've been playing this weekend. I really need to just leave my nice new computer alone and go do some writing on my laptop. If I finish a chapter then I will consider myself allowed to play some more.....
laialda: (Thoughtful)
It's true. I never stop thiking about the fics I'm working on but, with a few exceptions, I usually don't feel like writing. Doubly so since my best friend moved out in June and I never get time alone to write (except for sitting on my bed in my room which is quite uncomfortable really). Combined with wedding planning/immigration paper work and crafting to sell tihngs at cons and you get a big lump of no time online.

Since hopping back into HP fics though and being just disgusted at what's popular right now (*gasp* your fic has Weasley and Dumbledore bashing to the extreme and Harry has a harem!!? That sounds so completely original! *rolls eyes with heavy amounts of sarcasm*) it has kicked my desire to write something decent back into the forefront on my mind. So this is where I stand on things:
  • Harry Potter/Alice Crossover 'Curious and Curious' - Chapter 11 now has a title to go with it's outline, along with many small notes in my head that I may or may not remember while I write. Hatter and Alice will be getting seperate scoldings and may have their talk before it ends, depends on how long the piece is already running.
  • Doctor Who/Alice Crossover 'New New Wonderland' - Chapter 2 has been sitting with about 2 pages typed into the first scene since June and I feel quite guilty about it. I've fallen into the trap of actually plotting everything out in detail and now have little drive to work on this crossover/ Doctor&Rose reunion fic as I know what happens. *sigh* Really would like to work on it some as it would be a very serious piece and I think my idea is a unquie one.

I have a week until my next convention so I do need to work on finishing the things I need for that (5 dolls, 4 hacky-sacks, bottlecaps and wands) but I think I'll try to do some writing tonight and see what comes of it. :)

Also, side note, after sepending some more time on LJ I think I'm going to put my fiction up on my journal here as well in the near by future. Thinking about back dating it if I do so I don't clog up those very few people who have me on their f-list. Plus it would let me make pretty banners for my stories and as an artist this appeals to me greatly. XD
laialda: (Denial)
So, I'm sitting across from my bin of finished crafts and the dolls inside are taunting me...Ever since I made an army for the convention back in May I've had the overwhelming urge to just, well, make little comics/photo adventures with them.

Why thank you brain for giving me the idea for another project I don't have time for. No really I appreciate it  >.<
laialda: (Almost)
[Error: unknown template qotd]
This is going to sound very silly, but honestly? A cartwheel. I just can't do one to save my life. I'm so horrible at it that it baffled my gym teachers back in school when they tried to teach me and they eventually just gave up trying to help me. Suppose I'm just not meant to stand or spin upside down. *sigh*
laialda: (mischevious)
Saw it the movie twice over the past few days and I feel after the second viewing I'm up to writing my feelings and thoughts on how everything was done.
Not recommened that you read if you don't want changes from the book to the movie spoiled for you. )

Overall? I think it wasn't that bad. You really have to take the movies as a separate universe from the books I think if you're a fan but I don't think the movie was horrible. Certainly not the worst of the franchise by any stretch of the imagination. I hold movie 6 in that lovely spot of honor. So much so that when I was given a run down of the movie by my friend (pictured above) I quickly changed my mind on wanting to see it.
laialda: (denial)
On day 4 of driving cross-country with my best friend this week and we've hit a minor bump...we messed up on some of our planning and can't go to the Civil Rights Museum we wanted to today (the ONLY day of the week it's closed is Tuesday >.<) and now we have another driving only day in front of us. And driving days? yeah, they lead to these sorts of conversations:

N-"...I'm on the wrong side of the bed."
B-"Is it gonna bother you?"
N-"No...I should be fine."
*pause*
B-"Are you sure? Cause we can switch."
N-"Well I don't wanna put you out. Your side is all warm already."
B-"...That was a weak ass excuse."
*laughs*
N-"No, really though, I should be fine."
B-"Is it gonna keep you from sleeping?"
N-"Umm...I don't know..."
B-"Oh my god! Just switch the damn sides with me!" *Moves and forces N to roll over with a huff* " 'I don't know.' What the hell kind of answer is that?!"
-----------------------------
In my defense, I was only worried I might roll off in the middle of the night cause my body would be expecting bed behind me when it wasn't there...

This is just the latest to add to a few other brilliant gems of dialog we've had in the car this week:
N-*sings* "The hills are alive with...giant mutant broccoli.."
----------
N-*Points to tall wire fence* "Look, a net for that falling rock we keep hearing about."
B-"Uhhh...more like to stop the giant T-Rex coming to get us."
----------
N-"50+ restaurants!...and something about cranberries..."
-----------------------
Fear for my brain power after this trip is over people. I know I am. o.o
laialda: (pleased)
Gonna go on the stereotypically womanly post here I suppose but I was just struck with the need to write about this today.
